Sony finally answered the multiverse question, and it involves three generations of Spider-Man villains at once.

Sony Pictures Entertainment premiered the official full trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” on the night of November 16, 2021, debuting it first at a dedicated fan event in Los Angeles before pushing it out worldwide online. Directed by Jon Watts and locked into an exclusive theatrical release on December 17, 2021, the film marks Tom Holland’s third solo outing as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The three-minute reel does something Marvel trailers rarely do this bluntly: it shows exactly how the studio plans to blow up its own continuity.

• The trailer picks up directly from 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” where Quentin Beck’s Mysterio exposed Peter’s secret identity, and shows him asking Doctor Strange to cast a spell erasing that knowledge from the world.
• When Peter keeps interrupting the spell to protect the memories of MJ (Zendaya), Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), the casting breaks and rips open the multiverse.
• Five legacy villains from Sony’s earlier Spider-Man franchises are confirmed on screen: Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman, Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard.

A Spell Gone Wrong

The setup is a direct continuation of the identity crisis that closed out “Far From Home.” With Peter’s secret out and the legal and public fallout hitting him, MJ, Ned and Aunt May all at once, Parker goes to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange at the New York Sanctum and asks him to cast a reality-altering spell that makes everyone on Earth forget he is Spider-Man. Strange starts the incantation, but Peter can’t stop himself from jumping in mid-spell, trying to carve out exceptions for the people he loves. The spell destabilizes, and instead of erasing Spider-Man’s identity, it tears a hole between universes.

Five Villains, Three Different Movie Franchises

What comes through that hole is the trailer’s real hook: villains from Sony’s pre-MCU Spider-Man movies, all of whom know Spider-Man’s secret identity from their own timelines. Alfred Molina reprises Otto Octavius from Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2,” alongside Dafoe’s Norman Osborn and Church’s Sandman from that same trilogy. From Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” series, Jamie Foxx returns as Max Dillon’s Electro and Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors’ Lizard. It’s the first time footage has confirmed that this film is pulling directly from three separate Spider-Man film universes into one story.

The standout beat comes when Doc Ock pins Holland’s Peter to the ground and rips off his mask expecting to see someone else entirely. Realizing he’s looking at the wrong Peter Parker, he mutters the line that’s now defining the trailer’s marketing push.

“You’re not Peter Parker.”

Strange’s Fix Comes With a Body Count

The trailer also sets up the central conflict between Peter and Strange over what to do with the villains now stranded in the wrong universe. Strange argues these characters are fated to die fighting Spider-Man in their own timelines, and pulling them out of that fate could unravel far more than one spell already has. Peter, predictably, isn’t willing to just send Doc Ock, Norman Osborn and the rest back to their deaths, setting up the moral tug-of-war that looks to drive the film once Holland’s Peter starts trying to “fix” villains who were never his to save.

Marvel Studios has leaned into multiverse storytelling across its Disney+ slate this year, and fans tracking the studio’s other 2022 trailers, including the recent Moon Knight footage, have noticed the pattern of using trailers to reveal exactly how far these crossovers will go.

“No Way Home” hits theaters exclusively on December 17, 2021, and with five confirmed villains already unmasked in the trailer, the bigger question heading into that date is which alternate-universe Spider-Men, if any, show up to help Holland clean up the mess Strange’s spell created.
