Boris Johnson’s love life has produced three marriages, at least two public affairs and a Downing Street wedding kept secret from his own aides.

The Prime Minister’s current wife, Carrie Johnson, née Symonds, didn’t just become his third spouse — she became the first person to live at 10 Downing Street unmarried alongside a sitting PM, then the first spouse to marry a sitting British Prime Minister in nearly 200 years. Getting there took two failed marriages, at least five children by three different women, and a 2018 affair that blew up a 25-year partnership.

The marriage’s decisive break came in 2018, when it emerged Johnson was involved with Carrie Symonds — then the Conservative Party’s head of communications, who had worked on his 2012 London mayoral reelection bid. Wheeler filed for divorce shortly after. The fallout inside the family was blunt: Lara, the eldest of the four Wheeler children, reportedly branded her father a “selfish bastard” over the affair. The financial settlement between Johnson and Wheeler wasn’t finalized until 2020.

From Campaign Staffer To Downing Street

Carrie Symonds, 23 years Johnson’s junior and the daughter of Independent co-founder Matthew Symonds, moved into Downing Street with Johnson when he became Prime Minister in July 2019 — making them the first unmarried couple ever to live there together. In February 2020, the pair announced their engagement and their first pregnancy in the same breath; son Wilfred arrived that April.

Johnson became the first sitting British Prime Minister to marry while in office in almost 200 years.

The pair had reportedly sent out save-the-date cards pointing to a July 2022 wedding, which made the actual ceremony something of a sleight of hand. On May 29, 2021, Johnson and Symonds married at Westminster Cathedral in a ceremony kept secret even from senior aides, capped at 30 guests under pandemic restrictions still in force at the time.

Carrie’s Own Ground

Since moving into Downing Street, Carrie has built a public identity that’s separate from — and at times has visibly reshaped — her husband’s. She’s been outspoken on environmental and conservation causes, and she’s had to do all of it under the kind of scrutiny that comes with being the first woman to hold the informal title of Downing Street’s “first lady” while unmarried to a sitting PM. That scrutiny only intensified once the secret wedding became public, given how tightly Johnson’s team had controlled the story beforehand.

The through-line across all three marriages is the same: infidelity kept surfacing, and kept costing him. Two marriages ended in divorce, a third began under a media blackout, and a fourth relationship — with Macintyre — produced a daughter outside any marriage at all. Whatever Carrie’s own priorities turn out to be inside Number 10, she got there by watching Johnson’s past catch up with him first.
