The bigot in the armchair made history, but half his neighborhood is gone.

“All in the Family” ran on CBS from 1971 to 1979 and rewired what a sitcom was allowed to talk about, putting racism, sexism and generational conflict inside Archie Bunker’s living room every week. Everyone remembers losing Carroll O’Connor, who played Archie and died in 2001 at 76, and Jean Stapleton, who played Edith and died in 2013 at 90. Fewer people realize how much of the rest of the cast — the neighbors, the barflies, the Jeffersons next door — is gone too.

Vincent Gardenia played Frank Lorenzo, whose feminist wife Irene — played by Betty Garrett — regularly clashed with Archie’s outdated worldview. Gardenia died in 1992 at 72, and Garrett followed in 2011 at 91.

Kelsey’s Bar was where Archie held court outside the house, and the actors who staffed and populated it turned into recurring fixtures of the show’s world. Jason Wingreen played bartender Harry Snowden and lived to 95, dying in 2015. Bob Hastings played bar patron Tommy Kelsey and died in 2014. Billy Halop, who played Archie’s cab-driving friend Bert Munson, died much earlier, in 1976. Burt Mustin, the quippy retirement-home resident Justin Quigley, died in 1977 at 92 — one of the earliest cast losses from the show’s run.

Cumulative Financial Losses Explained

Part of why so many “All in the Family” names have quietly passed is simple math: Lear cast a lot of these supporting roles with actors who were already well into their careers when the show premiered in 1971, and the show ran only eight seasons before wrapping in 1979. Compare that to the two actors most viewers associate with survival from the show — Rob Reiner (Mike Stivic) and Sally Struthers (Gloria Bunker) — who both remain active decades later, which makes the gap between the leads and the supporting cast feel even wider when you actually count the names.
