Goldberg is back, and Dolph Ziggler just picked the worst possible week to run his mouth.

Monday Night Raw in Pittsburgh turned into an ambush on August 5, 2019, when a routine contract signing on “Miz TV” blew up into a WWE Hall of Famer’s surprise return. Dolph Ziggler thought he was there to put pen to paper on a SummerSlam match with The Miz. Instead, he walked into Goldberg’s music, Goldberg’s stare-down, and a signature line he’s been shouting at opponents for two decades.

Ziggler leaned into the role of the disrespectful young gun mocking legends who, in his telling, had no business still lacing up boots.

That storyline was originally pointed at a different opponent entirely. Ziggler was booked to face The Miz at SummerSlam, and the two were set to formalize it with a contract signing on Raw, with Shawn Michaels standing by as the special guest overseeing the paperwork.

The Bait-and-Switch on Miz TV

Ziggler played his part to the hilt — signing the contract, taunting Michaels, mocking The Miz — before The Miz flipped the whole angle on its head. He told Ziggler flatly that he wasn’t the man Ziggler would be facing in Toronto. Moments later, Goldberg’s entrance music hit, and the Pittsburgh crowd erupted as pyrotechnics lit up the arena entrance.

It’s the kind of swerve WWE has leaned on for years to reset a stale program, and it worked because the crowd had no idea it was coming. For a promo built entirely on disrespecting legends, having the biggest legend on the roster walk through the curtain to answer it directly was about as clean a payoff as the segment could have delivered.

Goldberg marched to the ring, signed the contract to make Ziggler vs. Goldberg official for SummerSlam, and stood face-to-face with a visibly stunned Ziggler. Then came the line that’s followed him since his WCW days.

Goldberg made his exit, but the segment wasn’t done. With Ziggler still distracted, The Miz caught him with a kick, and Shawn Michaels finished him off with Sweet Chin Music to close the show — a small measure of payback for weeks of Ziggler’s insults toward both men.

High Stakes in Toronto

This marks Goldberg’s first singles match since that criticized outing with The Undertaker at Super ShowDown, and it gives him a chance to answer months of Ziggler running down his legacy with something more decisive than a promo. Ziggler, for his part, now has to back up all that talk against a guy who’s built a career out of ending matches in a hurry. It’s the kind of contrast — mouthpiece versus legend — that WWE has booked plenty of times before, and it’s exactly the setup that makes for a memorable comeback story, the sort fans still bring up in conversations about stars who silenced the people doubting them.

Goldberg vs. Ziggler is now official for SummerSlam on August 11 at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, and the way this go-home segment played out, Ziggler’s spent more time getting laid out by The Miz and Michaels than he has talking about how he plans to beat Goldberg. That’s not exactly the kind of momentum you want heading into a fight with a guy who ended careers in seconds during his WCW prime.
