Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s granddaughter has spent her whole life fielding the same comment: you look just like her.

Rose Kennedy Schlossberg is the eldest grandchild of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and the resemblance to her grandmother is impossible to miss — the same wide-set dark eyes, the same brunette hair, the same facial structure that made Jackie O a style icon for generations. But Schlossberg has spent her adult life building a résumé that has nothing to do with looking the part.

Schlossberg grew up close to her grandmother both literally and emotionally — Jackie O lived just blocks away on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and doted on her granddaughter daily until her death in 1994. Trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the local parks near their apartments were part of that routine, the kind of ordinary grandmother-granddaughter time that happened to take place a short walk from Fifth Avenue.

That closeness came with loss early. Schlossberg was also deeply affected by the 1999 death of her uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., with whom she shared a close relationship — a second Kennedy tragedy she had to absorb before she’d even finished high school.

Skipping Politics For Harvard And NYU

Unlike other members of her family, Schlossberg never ran for office or angled toward one. Instead, she went the academic-and-creative route: an undergraduate English studies degree from Harvard in 2010, then a Master of Professional Studies from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program — commonly known as ITP — in 2013, a program built for people who want to make things with technology rather than write theory about it.

Building A Web Series Out Of Hurricane Sandy

In 2016, Schlossberg co-created and starred in End Times Girls Club, an apocalyptic comedy web series made with her friend Mara Nelson-Greenberg. Schlossberg has explained the idea came from watching how people actually responded to disaster in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and the series ran on that same idea straight-faced: satirical survivalist advice paired with beauty tutorials, imagining a world where girls survive the apocalypse without giving up their aesthetic.

It’s the kind of concept that could easily read as a stunt for a famous name, except Schlossberg has generally avoided leaning on her family for attention — a pattern similarly seen among other famous relatives who chart their own course away from the spotlight their name creates.

Working Behind The Camera Too

Schlossberg’s production credits extend past comedy. She worked as a producer on the 2017 docuseries Time: The Kalief Browder Story, a considerably heavier project than the satire of End Times Girls Club and a sign that her interest in filmmaking isn’t limited to one register. Between Harvard, NYU’s ITP, a comedy web series, and a documentary producing credit, she’s built a body of work that stands on its own — even as every profile of her still leads with the same comparison to her grandmother.
