Many of those lucky enough to have found fame call the U.S. home, and with huge portions of the entertainment industry existing on both coasts, it’s little wonder that so many stars live in the States.
But American living isn’t for everyone, and that includes certain celebrities.
While some of these famous people have simply chosen to expand their real estate portfolio to locations abroad, others have made the permanent leap away from their home country and into unfamiliar territory. Here are just a few stars who permanently left the U.S.
Who was Ezra Pound and what led him to leave the United States?
Throughout history, many famous stars have permanently left the United States for a variety of reasons. Some have sought greener pastures elsewhere, while others have faced controversy or disillusionment with their home country. In this article, we will examine several notable stars who have bade farewell to the United States.
One of the most famous stars to permanently leave the United States was the author and poet, Ezra Pound. Pound was a prominent figure in modernist literature, but his life took a dramatic turn during World War II when he moved to Mussolini’s Italy and broadcasted a series of anti-American and anti-Semitic propaganda messages. After the war, Pound was arrested by U.S. forces and spent several months in custody before being deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. He lived the rest of his life in Italy, eventually dying in 1972.
Another notable star who left the U.S. was the film director, Roman Polanski. In 1977, Polanski was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl and fled the United States before facing sentencing. Since then, Polanski has lived mostly in France and has continued to direct films, even winning a Best Director Oscar in 2002. However, he remains a controversial figure, with many calling for his extradition back to the United States to face trial.
Singer and actress Josephine Baker is another star who left the U.S. for good. Baker rose to fame in the 1920s and 30s as a dancer and entertainer, but faced racism and discrimination throughout her life. In 1951, she moved to France, where she became a citizen and continued to perform and advocate for civil rights. She returned briefly to the U.S. in the 1960s to participate in the Civil Rights Movement, but ultimately chose to remain in France for the rest of her life.
Finally, we must mention the famous actor, Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin was a beloved figure in Hollywood during the silent film era, but his career took a hit during the Red Scare of the 1950s. He was accused of communist sympathies and was denied entry back into the United States after a trip abroad. Chaplin eventually settled in Switzerland, where he lived until his death in 1977.
These are just a few of the many stars who have permanently left the United States. Each of them had their own reasons for leaving, but they all share a common bond of seeking a new life outside of their home country. Whether it was for political reasons, personal reasons, or simply to follow their dreams, these stars made bold and unforgettable choices that forever changed the course of their lives.
