While, in theory, “reality television” is supposed to be rooted in reality, the truth is that the vast majority of reality TV is highly-edited, often in order to showcase bad behavior from one or two stars.
Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of backstabbing, arguments, and full-on physical fights in reality TV land, but which stars have taken things to a whole other level?
While some of these people have leaned hard into their villain persona, others have just suffered the misfortune of having their worst days caught on camera. From Kim and Kourtney’s konstant konfrontation, to Puck’s reign of “Real World” terror, here are just a few of the reality stars who treat their co-stars like trash.
What consequences can reality TV show drama have on the mental health of cast members?
Over the past couple of years, reality TV shows have gained immense popularity around the world. Viewers tune in to watch their favorite stars on shows like The Real Housewives, Keeping up with the Kardashians, and Love Island. However, behind the glamorous façade, these shows often hide a darker side, as some stars have been known to treat their co-stars with disdain, disrespect, and sometimes outright hostility.
One of the most notorious examples of this behavior is exhibited by the Real Housewives franchise. Across the various versions of the show, cast members regularly engage in verbal and physical altercations, hurling insults and accusations at each other in front of the cameras. However, this type of behavior is not just limited to the Housewives franchise. Other reality shows, such as Love Island, have also come under fire for promoting toxic relationships and contributing to a culture of bullying.
Perhaps one of the most extreme examples of this behavior is exhibited by the Kardashian-Jenner family. The family, which rose to fame with the hit show Keeping up with the Kardashians, has been accused of exploiting and mistreating their co-stars for years. The show’s youngest star, Kylie Jenner, famously fired her longtime best friend and assistant, Jordyn Woods, after she was caught kissing Khloe Kardashian’s partner at the time. The move generated widespread backlash from fans, with many accusing Kylie of throwing her friend under the bus to save face.
While some argue that this type of drama is what makes reality TV so addictive, others point out that it can have lasting consequences for the cast members involved. In some cases, the show’s harsh treatment of its stars has been linked to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Love Island, for example, has faced criticism for its lack of support for former cast members who have struggled with their mental health after leaving the show.
However, despite the criticism, reality shows continue to draw in millions of viewers around the world. In many ways, they offer a glimpse into the glamorous lives of the rich and famous, and allow viewers to escape their own realities for a while. But as we immerse ourselves in these shows, it’s worth remembering that the drama and conflict we see on screen are often not reflective of real-life relationships.
