Game Theory: The Secret Identity of Hollow Knight’s Hero (Hollow Knight)

A game that grabbed my attention recently is Hollow Knight, the indie darling about insect creatures in masks being terrorized by a creature corrupted by Randiance.

This game is LOADED with theory material but what grabbed my attention most was the character we play as – the Knight.

How does the use of anonymity and the lack of a defined protagonist in Hollow Knight reflect broader trends and themes in contemporary video game storytelling and design?

Game Theory: The Secret Identity of Hollow Knight’s Hero (Hollow Knight)

Hollow Knight, developed and published by Australian indie game developer, Team Cherry, is a critically acclaimed action-adventure video game that was released in 2017. The game is set in the decaying kingdom of Hallownest, where the player assumes the role of a mysterious bug-like creature known as “The Knight” and navigates the treacherous world, fighting enemies and bosses, and discovering hidden secrets.

However, one of the most intriguing elements of Hollow Knight is the mysterious identity of the game’s hero, who remains unknown throughout the game’s storyline. This has led to many theories and debates among the game’s fanbase, with several prominent hypotheses attempting to uncover the hero’s secret identity using clues scattered throughout the game.

One popular theory is that the hero is actually the “Pure Vessel” – a failed experiment by the Pale King, the game’s main antagonist, to forge a perfect vessel for his children, the Hollow Knights. The Pure Vessel is a significant character in the game’s lore, as it is the only Hollow Knight that was able to resist the influence of the game’s primary antagonist, the Radiance.

However, this theory has been contested as the Pure Vessel is also known to have died before the events of the game’s storyline, making it unlikely that it could be The Knight.

Another popular theory is that The Knight is actually the Pale King himself. This theory is supported by several subtle hints present in the game, such as The Knight’s similar appearance to the Pale King, both having a crown-like design on their head. Additionally, the game’s two endings, which involve The Knight becoming a new king, further reinforce this theory.

However, this theory is also contested, as it is suggested that the Pale King died before the events of the game’s storyline, making it unlikely that he could be The Knight.

Further, some fans have suggested that The Knight may not have any specific identity but serves merely as a vessel for the player to inhabit, allowing for a more immersive gameplay experience. While this theory provides a plausible explanation for The Knight’s mysterious identity, it does not account for the various clues scattered throughout the game that hint at a more substantial backstory.

Overall, the true identity of The Knight remains a mystery, leaving fans speculating and theorizing as to the hero’s origins and role in the game’s storyline. Regardless of the character’s true identity, the game’s compelling and immersive storyline certainly provides an unforgettable experience for players worldwide.
