Samsung packed a laptop reveal, a smartwatch redesign and a Microsoft CEO cameo into one Brooklyn keynote — and CNET boiled the whole thing down to eleven minutes.

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked keynote landed at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 7, 2019, and the headline act was clear from the first minute: the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. But the show didn’t stop there. Samsung used the stage to introduce a Windows laptop running on a Qualcomm chip, a redesigned smartwatch, and — in a genuinely unusual crossover moment — Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

• Samsung split the Note line into two sizes for the first time — a 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 10 and a 6.8-inch Note 10+ — and both ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack entirely.

Two Notes Instead of One

For years the Note line was a single, oversized phone built around the S Pen. That changed at Barclays Center: Samsung split the family into a 6.3-inch Note 10 and a 6.8-inch Note 10+, giving buyers a size choice for the first time in the series’ history. Both phones dropped the headphone jack, following the path Samsung’s own Galaxy S line and most of the rest of the industry had already taken.

The S Pen Learns New Tricks

The stylus got the biggest functional upgrade in the keynote. Samsung built a six-axis sensor into the S Pen to power Air Actions — gesture-based controls that let users wave the pen to control the camera, flip through presentations, or navigate menus without touching the screen. Samsung also demoed sharper handwriting-to-text conversion, aimed at making the S Pen feel less like a gimmick and more like an actual input tool for notes and documents.

Samsung Builds a Windows Laptop, and Nadella Shows Up

The bigger surprise came when Samsung pivoted away from phones altogether to unveil the Galaxy Book S, an ultra-thin 13.3-inch laptop running Windows 10 on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx processor. Samsung touted up to 23 hours of battery life and built-in LTE — always-on connectivity without hunting for Wi-Fi. To underline how serious Samsung was about the Windows tie-in, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella walked onstage himself to talk up deeper integration between Samsung’s hardware and the Windows ecosystem, a notable show of cross-company cooperation for a hardware keynote usually reserved for showing off cameras and screens.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 Rounds Out the Show

Samsung closed out the wearables portion with the Galaxy Watch Active 2, built around a digital, touch-sensitive rotating bezel that replaces the physical rotating ring from the original Watch Active. Samsung paired the new bezel with upgraded health-tracking sensors, positioning the Active 2 as the fitness-forward companion to the Note 10 and Note 10+ rather than a standalone flagship watch.

Between the Note 10 split, the S Pen’s new gesture tricks, and Nadella’s cameo pitching Windows compatibility, Samsung used its August 7 keynote to argue it’s not just a phone maker anymore — it’s trying to sell an entire desk setup, from the Galaxy Book S on your lap to the Note 10+ in your hand.
