Draymond and KD Reveal What Really Happened with Warriors Fallout | FULL INTERVIEW (Chips)
The explosive fallout between Draymond Green and Kevin Durant during a November 2018 game against the Los Angeles Clippers shook the Golden State Warriors to their core. Now, over two years later, the two players are speaking out about what really happened that fateful night and the toll it took on their relationship on and off the court.
In a full interview with journalist and author Marcus Thompson II for his Chips podcast, Green and Durant opened up about the incident that became one of the defining moments of the Warriors’ 2018-2019 season.
The trouble began when Durant, a notoriously private player, was asked about his upcoming free agency during a press conference. Green, who has a reputation for being fiercely loyal to his teammates, reportedly took exception to Durant’s dismissive response and called him out in the locker room following the team’s overtime loss to the Clippers.
According to Green, he was standing up for his teammates and expressing his frustration with Durant’s lack of commitment to the team. Durant, on the other hand, felt like he was being attacked and disrespected.
“I felt like everybody in the arena, everybody watching the game saw me being attacked, and they were waiting for me to fight back,” Durant said in the interview with Thompson.
The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with Green reportedly telling Durant that the team didn’t need him and that they had won a championship without him. Durant responded by telling Green that he was a “bitch” and that he was going to leave the team at the end of the season.
The aftermath of the incident was widely covered by the media, with many speculating that it was the beginning of the end for the Warriors dynasty. In the interview with Thompson, Green and Durant both admitted that the fallout from the incident had a profound impact on their relationship.
“I regret how it all played out,” Green said. “I never wanted it to get to where it was. And I think everyone knows that I’m a guy that tries to make everything right, and I didn’t do that in that situation.”
Durant echoed Green’s sentiments, saying that he wished he had handled the situation differently.
“I should have just told him how I felt, instead of trying to act like everything was okay,” Durant said. “But in that moment, I was so frustrated that I just said things that I didn’t mean.”
Despite the tension between the two players, the Warriors were able to make it to their fifth straight NBA Finals that season. However, they were ultimately defeated by the Toronto Raptors in six games, and Durant suffered a devastating Achilles injury in Game 5.
In the interview with Thompson, both Green and Durant expressed regret over how their relationship deteriorated and how the incident ultimately impacted the team.
“It’s just sad that we had to go through that,” Green said. “It’s sad that it happened the way it did, but it happened, and we have to deal with it.”
Durant echoed Green’s sentiment, saying that he wished he had been more open and honest with his teammates and that he had handled the situation differently.
“I learned that you’ve got to be able to communicate with your teammates, and you can’t just assume that everything is okay,” Durant said. “You’ve got to be willing to have those tough conversations and be honest with each other.”
The fallout between Green and Durant was a difficult moment for the Warriors and their fans, but it ultimately became a learning experience for everyone involved. As Green and Durant both acknowledge in the interview with Thompson, communication and honesty are key to maintaining strong relationships on and off the court.
