The underworld of Tatooine finally has a new ruler, and Lucasfilm just showed him claiming the throne.
Disney+ dropped the first official trailer for “The Book of Boba Fett” on November 1, 2021, giving fans their first real look at the live-action spinoff ahead of its December 29 premiere. The seven-episode series, first teased in a post-credits scene at the end of “The Mandalorian” Season 2, follows bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) as they move to take control of the criminal territory once run by Jabba the Hutt and Bib Fortuna.

Jon Favreau wrote all seven episodes and co-wrote chapter six with Dave Filoni, continuing the writing partnership that built “The Mandalorian.” Favreau, Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson executive produce, with Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck as co-executive producers, John Bartnicki producing, and John Hampian as co-producer. Rodriguez, who directed Fett’s return in “The Mandalorian,” brings that same connective thread to the new series.
Filming wrapped in mid-2021, with the production built as a direct bridge into “The Mandalorian” Season 3 rather than a standalone detour. Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand gets significantly more to do than her brief “Mandalorian” appearances suggested. The trailer positions her as Fett’s equal partner in running the underworld, not a hired gun — she’s in the room for every negotiation shown, and the marketing has treated the two as co-leads rather than Fett plus a sidekick.
That dynamic sets up the show’s central tension: can two people who built careers on violence actually govern through anything other than violence? The trailer doesn’t answer it, but it’s clearly the question the season is built around, playing out against the same Mos Espa streets and palace corridors that anchored Jabba’s reign in “Return of the Jedi.”
