Warner Bros. just showed the world what happens when Dumbledore can’t fight his own battle.

On December 13, 2021, Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the official teaser trailer for “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” and it’s the first real look at Mads Mikkelsen stepping into the role of Gellert Grindelwald after Johnny Depp’s exit from the franchise. Directed by David Yates from a script co-written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, the film is the third of five planned Wizarding World prequels. The 2-minute, 38-second trailer lays out the stakes plainly: Albus Dumbledore can’t confront Grindelwald himself, so he needs someone else to do it for him.

The Blood Pact at the Center of the Story

The trailer’s engine is a piece of backstory long referenced in the Wizarding World: a blood pact Dumbledore and Grindelwald made as teenagers that keeps either man from raising his wand against the other. That constraint is why Dumbledore can’t simply walk in and stop Grindelwald’s rise himself. Instead, he taps Newt Scamander to lead a resistance built from magizoologists, professors, and one Muggle who has no business being anywhere near dark wizards.

Set in the 1930s, in the years pushing toward what the franchise calls the Global Wizarding War, the footage returns to Hogwarts Castle, with shots inside the Great Hall and the Room of Requirement, before jumping to magical communities in Germany, China, and Bhutan. The trailer also introduces Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) turning destructive magic on Dumbledore himself, a clear signal of how personal this fight has become.

Newt Scamander’s Team Takes Shape

Scamander doesn’t go it alone. The trailer confirms his crew includes his brother Theseus (Callum Turner), Ilvermorny professor Eulalie “Lally” Hicks (Jessica Williams), French-Senegalese wizard Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam), Newt’s assistant Bunty (Victoria Yeates), and Muggle baker Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler). Kowalski’s inclusion has always been the franchise’s comic wildcard, and this trailer leans into it hard.

It’s a small moment, but it tells you everything about the tone Yates and Rowling are going for: even a Muggle baker gets pulled into a war between wizards, armed with a wand he can’t actually use. Alison Sudol returns as Queenie Goldstein and Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, rounding out an ensemble that’s grown considerably since the first “Fantastic Beasts” in 2016. James Newton Howard again composed the score.

A Franchise Betting on a New Villain

Recasting Grindelwald was never going to be a quiet decision, and this trailer is the first real test of whether audiences accept Mikkelsen in a role Depp originated in 2018’s “Crimes of Grindelwald.” The footage gives him plenty of screen time opposite Law’s Dumbledore, and the tension between the two men — bound by that old pact, unable to fight each other directly — is clearly meant to carry the film’s emotional weight. Studios have leaned on trailer drops like this all year to reset audience expectations around big franchise entries, much the way Marvel did with its own Moon Knight teaser or how Amazon reintroduced its Middle-earth series with the Rings of Power title announcement.

The Release Calendar

Warner Bros. has staggered the rollout: international markets get “The Secrets of Dumbledore” starting April 7-8, 2022, ahead of the wide North American and IMAX premiere on April 15, 2022. That gap is standard for the studio’s biggest tentpoles, giving overseas markets — where the “Fantastic Beasts” films have historically outperformed their domestic numbers — first crack at the film before the U.S. push.

Redmayne, Law, Miller, Fogler, Sudol, Turner, Williams, Waterston, and Mikkelsen make up the credited ensemble, with Yates directing his fourth Wizarding World feature overall. The wand-in-hand image of Jacob Kowalski is the moment fans are already screenshotting, but the real question this trailer answers is simple: come April 15, does Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald feel like enough of a threat to justify keeping Dumbledore on the sidelines for two more hours?
