Apple just rewrote the entire iPhone lineup in one 90-minute keynote.

On Tuesday, September 14, Tim Cook took the stage — virtually, from Apple Park in Cupertino — for the company’s “California Streaming” event. The keynote delivered exactly what the fall Apple calendar usually delivers: four new iPhones, a redesigned iPad mini, an updated entry-level iPad, and a beefed-up Apple Watch, all backed by hard release dates instead of the usual “coming this fall” vagueness.

  • Apple unveiled the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, all running the new A15 Bionic chip with a notch cut 20% smaller.
  • The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max add a 120Hz ProMotion display, 3x telephoto zoom, macro photography, and — for the first time — a 1TB storage option.
  • Pre-orders open September 17, phones ship September 24, and iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8 all land September 20.

Four Phones, One Chip

The iPhone 13 mini (5.4 inches) and standard iPhone 13 (6.1 inches) start at $699 and $799 respectively, with Apple doubling the base storage tier to 128GB — a real answer to years of complaints about paying extra just to escape 64GB. Both get a redesigned dual-camera system with sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a feature previously reserved for the Pro Max last year, plus the new Cinematic mode for shooting video with rack-focus depth effects on the fly.

Battery life got a genuine bump across the board, with Apple citing 1.5 to 2.5 additional hours depending on the model. Combined with the smaller notch and the A15 Bionic chip, the standard lineup looks like Apple’s biggest across-the-board camera and endurance jump since the iPhone 11.

The Pro Upgrade: ProMotion Finally Arrives

The iPhone 13 Pro ($999) and Pro Max ($1,099) are where Apple saved its headline features. Both get a 120Hz ProMotion Super Retina XDR display — the adaptive refresh-rate technology iPhone users have been asking for since Apple put it on the iPad Pro back in 2017 — along with a 3x optical telephoto lens and a new macro photography mode that focuses as close as 2 centimeters.

The Pro and Pro Max are the first iPhones ever offered with 1TB of storage — more capacity than plenty of laptops.

The Pro models also inherit the sensor-shift stabilization and Cinematic mode from the rest of the lineup, but pair it with the larger sensor and telephoto reach that make the triple-camera system meaningfully better in low light than last year’s iPhone 12 Pro.

iPad Mini Gets Its Biggest Redesign in Years

Apple didn’t stop at phones. The iPad mini 6 ditches the old home button entirely for an edge-to-edge 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, moving Touch ID into the top power button. It also switches to USB-C and now supports the second-generation Apple Pencil — a combination that turns Apple’s smallest tablet into a genuinely capable pocket-sized workstation rather than just a budget iPad. Alongside it, the ninth-generation 10.2-inch iPad gets bumped to the A13 Bionic chip, keeping the entry-level tablet as the cheapest way into Apple’s ecosystem.

Apple Watch Series 7 and the Software Rollout

The Apple Watch Series 7 brings nearly 20% more screen area than the Series 6, with bezels trimmed to 1.7mm, a front crystal built to resist cracking, and faster charging. It starts at $399 but won’t ship until later in the fall — the one product from the keynote without a firm release date.

Everything else, though, is locked in: iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8 all arrive September 20, four days before the new iPhones reach customers’ hands. The timing put Apple’s hardware blitz in the same week entertainment fans were digging into other big fall reveals, from the first trailer for Halo The Series to the drop of Marvel’s Moon Knight trailer — exactly the kind of Apple TV+ and streaming content Cook has been quietly building the software side of these keynotes around.

Pre-orders open Friday, September 17, with the iPhone 13 lineup, iPad mini 6, and ninth-generation iPad all hitting shelves September 24. The Apple Watch Series 7 is still the outlier — no firm ship date yet, just “later this fall” — which means the real test of Apple’s fall lineup won’t finish until that watch actually lands in stores.
