Warner Bros. dropped the second trailer for “The Matrix Resurrections” on December 6, and it finally shows fans what eighteen years of waiting bought them.

The two-and-a-half-minute cut, released ahead of the film’s December 22 theatrical and HBO Max debut, leans hard into the franchise’s signature déjà vu — Neo waking up in a Matrix that looks upgraded, feels familiar, and hides more danger than the one he escaped. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss anchor the footage as Thomas Anderson/Neo and Trinity/Tiffany, both resurrected with their memories wiped after dying at the end of “The Matrix Revolutions.” Lana Wachowski directs solo this time, working from a script she co-wrote with novelists David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon.

Mr. Anderson is given the choice to follow the white rabbit again, and the trailer’s own framing makes clear the stakes have changed: “The Matrix is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before,” according to the film’s official synopsis. Reeves plays the dual identity of Thomas Anderson and Neo, a man who already knows what he has to do but doesn’t yet grasp what he’s walking back into.

Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into—the Matrix.

Trinity, Reimagined as Tiffany

Moss’s return carries the trailer’s emotional weight. She’s Trinity the warrior, but the Matrix has recast her as Tiffany — a suburban wife and mother of three with, notably, a taste for superpowered motorcycles. The trailer’s martial-arts sequences and a vehicle chase built around her double life give the footage its clearest hook: Neo isn’t just fighting to free himself, he’s trying to wake someone who doesn’t know she needs waking.

New Faces Inside the Machine

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, fresh off “Candyman” and the “Aquaman” franchise, steps into an alternate version of Morpheus, guiding Neo while chasing his own arc of self-discovery. Jessica Henwick plays Bugs, a hacker searching for the man who once sacrificed himself for humanity. Jonathan Groff plays Thomas Anderson’s business partner, and Neil Patrick Harris plays his therapist — both new pieces embedded in the “everyday life” side of Neo’s fractured reality. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Jada Pinkett Smith, returning as Niobe, round out a cast built to make audiences question who’s real and who’s code, much like the ensemble casting strategy studios have leaned on for other franchise revivals, including Prime Video’s Rings of Power rollout.

The Crew Behind the Curtain

Wachowski produced alongside James McTeigue and Grant Hill, with cinematographers Daniele Massaccesi and John Toll, production designers Hugh Bateup and Peter Walpole, and composers Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer — several of them “Sense8” veterans — building out the look and sound. Editor Joseph Jett Sally and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass handled the franchise’s trademark bullet-time-era effects work updated for a new decade, a promotional cycle running in the same window as other tentpole trailer drops like Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight teaser.

“The Matrix Resurrections” is rated R for violence and some language, and it arrives in theaters nationwide and on HBO Max’s ad-free plan on December 22, 2021, staying on the service in 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos for 31 days after its theatrical bow — the last checkpoint before fans find out whether Neo’s second trip down the rabbit hole was worth the eighteen-year wait.
