Predicting the future is a fool’s errand, but I tried it: talking about phones, lifelogging, and social changes.

And on top of that: what do I think’s coming in 2032?

What are some of the ways augmented and virtual reality are being used currently, and how might they be adopted more widely in the future?

Ten Years Ago, I Predicted 2022: A Reflection on the Future

In 2012, I wrote an article laying out my predictions for what the year 2022 might look like. As we approach that year, it’s worth reflecting on those predictions and assessing their accuracy.

Predicting the future is always a risky venture, and I freely admit that many of my predictions were more speculative than scientific. However, I based them on trends and patterns I saw in society and technology at the time, so I stand by them as at least reasonable possibilities.

In 2012, I believed that by 2022, we would see a significant shift towards renewable energy sources and a decrease in our reliance on fossil fuels. That prediction has certainly come true, as renewable energy has become much more affordable and accessible, and many countries have set goals for phasing out coal and oil.

I also predicted that self-driving cars would become more prevalent by 2022, although I may have been overly optimistic about how quickly that would happen. While autonomous vehicles are certainly being developed and tested, they haven’t yet become a regular part of our daily lives.

Another technology I predicted would grow in popularity was virtual and augmented reality. While these technologies have certainly advanced in the last decade, they haven’t quite reached the level of mainstream adoption that I envisioned. However, as we continue to see new applications of AR and VR in fields like gaming, education, and healthcare, I believe they will become more widespread in the coming years.

One prediction I made that hasn’t come true (yet) is the colonization of Mars. While the idea of sending humans to Mars is still very much a topic of research and discussion, we haven’t yet established a permanent base on the red planet.

Finally, I predicted that by 2022, we would see a greater focus on mental health and well-being in society. This prediction has certainly come true, as conversations about mental health have become more open and destigmatized, and resources for mental health support have become more accessible.

Overall, I’m pleased to see that many of my predictions for 2022 have come true, at least to some extent. Of course, the future is always uncertain, and there are undoubtedly many developments and breakthroughs that I couldn’t have predicted. However, analyzing our past predictions can help us make better-informed predictions for the future and keep us aware of how quickly our world is changing.
