Supercell just gave Clash Royale its biggest rarity shake-up since 2016.

On October 27, 2021, Supercell dropped the official launch trailer for “Clash Royale: The Champions Have Arrived!” — and with it, the introduction of an entirely new card rarity that hasn’t been touched since Legendaries debuted five years ago. The Champions and King Level 14 update reworks how endgame players build decks, upgrade cards, and fight for tower damage, giving the Arena its most significant structural change in years.

  • Three debut Champions — Archer Queen, Golden Knight, and Skeleton King — arrive at Level 11 with in-battle abilities powered by extra elixir spent mid-match.
  • Decks are capped at one Champion, and only one can be on the battlefield at a time, pulling it from the active card cycle until it’s defeated.
  • King Level 14 raises Tower hitpoints and damage, guarantees a Champion through Level Up Chests and new Royal Wild Chests, and comes with a Gold Rush offering up to 200,000 bonus gold.

The First New Rarity Since 2016

Legendaries changed the meta when they landed in 2016, and Supercell is betting Champions do the same. Unlike every other rarity in the game, Champions come with an activatable ability — a mechanic previously reserved for evolutions of gameplay Supercell had never shipped in Clash Royale before. The trailer frames it plainly: enter the Arena, surprise the enemy with abilities triggered mid-battle, and build around a single hero card instead of stacking generic troops.

Archer Queen turns invisible with “Cloaking Cape” and unloads rapid, amplified-damage arrows once she’s cloaked. Golden Knight’s “Dashing Dash” lets him chain-dash through multiple enemies in a single burst. Skeleton King’s “Soul Summoning” harvests souls off fallen troops on the battlefield and raises them as a skeleton swarm fighting for the player who summoned him.

Enter the Arena with your Champion and surprise the enemy with the new Champion Abilities that can be activated in battle.

The One-Champion Rule

Supercell built a hard restriction into the new rarity: a Battle Deck can only ever carry one Champion, and once it’s deployed, it’s off the field until defeated — no cycling a second copy back in like a normal card. That single restriction is what keeps Champions from steamrolling the meta the way stacked Legendaries once threatened to. It forces a real commitment; play your Champion badly and you’re down a card slot for the rest of the match.

King Level 14 and the New Progression Ladder

Champions don’t exist in a vacuum — they’re locked to the new King Level 14 cap, which lifts King and Princess Tower hitpoints and damage output while extending how far every card can be upgraded. Hit King Level 14 and Supercell guarantees a Champion drop through Level Up Chests or the newly added Royal Wild Chests. To soften the climb, gold costs for upgrading cards from Level 11 through 13 were lowered, XP thresholds for those same levels were reduced with retroactive compensation for players who’d already paid the old rates, and Star Points now unlock as early as King Level 6.

Competitive players get a change too: the tournament level cap moves up to Level 11, syncing ranked play with the new progression curve instead of leaving it behind. Trailer drops like this one sit alongside a run of other big mobile and console launch reveals this year — Supercell’s approach echoes the kind of major content-drop trailers seen from titles like Apex Legends’ Defiance launch trailer, where a new season reshapes core mechanics rather than just adding cosmetics.

The Gold Rush Incentive

To get players actually testing the new rarity instead of just reading patch notes, Supercell paired the update with a Champions Update Gold Rush, dangling up to 200,000 bonus gold for players who dive in during the event window. It’s the kind of limited-time incentive the game has leaned on before to drive engagement around major content drops — not unlike how other live-service titles time bonus currency to launch trailers, similar to the marketing push around Destiny 2’s Witch Queen weapons and gear reveal.

Try the Champions now through limited-time Challenges, or grind to King Level 14 and get one guaranteed. Either way, Archer Queen, Golden Knight, and Skeleton King are the new price of entry at the top of the Arena — and with only one allowed on the field at a time, picking the right Champion for your deck just became the biggest strategic call in Clash Royale.
