Instead, Derick Dillard has spent the years since his June 2014 wedding to Jill piling up Twitter controversies, a canceled ministry, and a very public break from TLC. Here’s what actually happened.

The Jazz Jennings Fallout

He tweeted that “‘Transgender’ is a myth” and that “Gender is not fluid; it’s ordained by God.” The backlash was immediate and loud, but Dillard didn’t back down — he kept misgendering Jennings and calling her identity delusional in follow-up posts.

TLC finally acted in November 2017, issuing a statement confirming it had cut ties with Dillard and had no plans to bring him back for Counting On. It marked the first time the network had publicly disowned a member of the extended Duggar cast over his own comments, a striking move for a show built almost entirely around family loyalty.

Turning on the Network That Made Him Famous

Once he was pushed out, Dillard didn’t go quietly. He accused TLC of treating him and Jill like unpaid “volunteers,” claiming the couple had never received direct compensation for years of filming. It was a rare on-the-record shot at the network from inside the extended Duggar family, whose members typically avoid criticizing the show that built their platform.

He didn’t stop at TLC’s business practices. In April 2018, Dillard targeted Nate & Jeremiah by Design stars Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, calling their same-sex family a “travesty” and accusing the network of pushing a “liberal agenda” by featuring them. It was the same playbook as the Jennings controversy — pick a fellow TLC talent, frame their identity as a network problem, and let the tweet ride.

The Ministry Money Questions

Dillard left his Walmart accounting job in 2015 to do missionary work in El Salvador with Jill, and the couple set up Dillard Family Ministries to solicit donations for the trip. That ministry didn’t survive the scrutiny that followed — critics raised questions about how the solicited funds were actually handled, and the organization was eventually shut down.

A Pattern of Online Outbursts

The Jennings and Berkus-Brent incidents were the highest-profile fights, but they weren’t isolated. Dillard also drew online outrage for commentary about survivors of the Parkland school shooting and for resurfaced 2015 footage showing him aiming a sled at a cat. Combined with his ministry controversy and his public break with TLC, the pattern places him alongside other reality figures who’ve torched their own standing 280 characters at a time — the same self-inflicted spiral covered in actors who ruined their careers on social media.

As of the network’s November 2017 statement, Dillard remains off Counting On with no indication TLC plans to change course — meaning the guy who once had a Walmart accounting job and a tidy reality-TV arc is now defined almost entirely by his Twitter feed.
