It’s been 20 years since the first “Harry Potter” movie hit theaters, and it’d be hard to imagine a reality where the franchise didn’t exist.

J.K. Rowling’s world of wizardry has been a huge part of many kids’ lives, and it’s impossible to think of Harry Potter without immediately seeing a young Daniel Radcliffe, or Professor Snape without Alan Rickman.

But what if those iconic characters had been played by someone else? What would Mr. Bean’s take on He Who Must Not Be Named have been like? Let’s take a look at the stars who were almost cast in Harry Potter.

Who was in talks to play Professor Trelawney before Emma Thompson?

The Harry Potter series is one of the most beloved and successful franchises in the world. With eight movies spanning over a decade, the cast of the series became a world-renowned and beloved group of actors. However, it’s interesting to think about who could’ve played our favourite characters, and how different the movies may have been.

Here are some of the stars who were almost cast in Harry Potter:

1. Liam Aiken

Liam Aiken was almost cast as Harry Potter. However, he eventually lost the role to Daniel Radcliffe. Aiken had already proven his acting talent in movies such as A Series of Unfortunate Events, but Radcliffe’s “boy next door” charm and instant connection with author J.K. Rowling swayed the decision.

2. Tim Roth

Tim Roth was considered for the role of Professor Snape. However, the filmmakers ultimately chose Alan Rickman, whose portrayal of Snape became one of the most iconic performances in the series. Roth may have added a different edge to Snape’s persona, but it’s hard to imagine anyone but Rickman in the role.

3. Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton was in talks to play Professor Trelawney, the eccentric seer who teaches Divination at Hogwarts. However, Emma Thompson eventually took the role, and brought her own unique flair to the character. Swinton’s uncanny ability to morph into any role could’ve made for an interesting Trelawney, but Thompson’s comedic timing and relatability ultimately made the character unforgettable.

4. Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Pike was a strong contender for the role of Rita Skeeter, the mischievous journalist who covers Harry’s adventures in The Goblet of Fire. However, the role eventually went to Miranda Richardson, who added a dose of humour and sass to the role that was much needed. Pike may have brought a more serious, hard-hitting energy to Skeeter, but Richardson’s performance dubbed her the perfect actress for the part.

5. Hugh Grant

Hugh Grant was offered the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, the accomplished (and pompous) wizard who teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts. However, Grant turned down the role, which eventually went to Kenneth Branagh. Branagh’s over-the-top performance as Lockhart was a highlight of the second movie, and gave the character charm in spite of his faults. Grant may have been a great Lockhart, but it’s hard to deny Branagh’s strong presence on screen.

The Harry Potter series may never have been the same if these stars were given the roles they almost had. However, it’s interesting to think about how different the films may have been with an alternate cast. The stars who ultimately landed the roles were perfect for the parts, but it’s fun to imagine how the movies could have played out differently.
