Sony Pictures dropped the full trailer for Morbius on November 2, 2021, and it did exactly what a Marvel-adjacent tease is supposed to do: it made the internet argue about Spider-Man’s multiverse for the rest of the day. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the film stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a man who cures himself of a fatal blood disease by splicing in bat DNA — and gets a lot more than he bargained for.

His answer is radical: fuse his blood with bat DNA and jolt the process with electroshock therapy. It works, in the sense that his disease disappears. It also doesn’t work, in the sense that he now has superhuman strength, agility, and echolocation, plus a craving for human blood he can barely leash.

Jared Harris plays Dr. Nicholas, Morbius’s mentor, and his role in the footage is the moral tug-of-war at the center of the film — he’s the voice warning Morbius that losing control isn’t a hypothetical, it’s a countdown. Standing opposite him is Matt Smith as Milo, Morbius’s childhood friend, who takes the exact opposite approach, pushing Morbius to stop fighting the transformation and simply “be the bad guy.” That split — cure versus curse, restraint versus appetite — is the engine of the entire trailer.

The Vulture Circles Back

What turned this trailer into a discussion topic wasn’t Morbius himself — it was everything around him. The footage includes graffiti tagging Spider-Man as a murderer, a glimpse of an Oscorp building, and, most notably, Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes, the Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Keaton’s character tells Morbius to “discover who you’re meant to be” and to keep in touch — a line that reads less like small talk and more like a recruitment pitch.

That exchange is the clearest signal yet that Sony intends to keep stitching its Spider-Man-adjacent properties into one shared world, the same instinct that’s driven other recent trailer rollouts like Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight trailer, where a new lead character gets introduced with an eye toward a much bigger universe.

Faces Behind the Fangs

Beyond Leto, Harris, Smith, and Keaton, the trailer fills out its cast with Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Morbius’s scientific collaborator and closest ally through the transformation. Al Madrigal appears as Agent Ramirez, and Tyrese Gibson plays FBI Agent Simon Stroud, both signaling that law enforcement is closing in on Morbius as his condition — and body count — escalates. Between the mentor, the tempter, the ally, and the investigators, the trailer sketches out a pressure chamber around Leto’s character rather than a simple hero’s journey.

Countdown to a January Release

Alongside the trailer, Sony released a promotional featurette in which Leto described stepping into the role as physical and transformational, calling it a “web of opportunity” — a phrase that, intentionally or not, keeps the Spider-Man wordplay alive. Morbius is locked in for an exclusive theatrical release in late January 2022, giving Sony a full quarter before the next wave of superhero releases to see whether Leto’s take on the Living Vampire can pull in the same crossover curiosity that fueled trailers for properties like Halo: The Series.

Whether audiences show up mainly for Leto’s transformation or for the Keaton cameo is going to be the real story once the box office numbers land in January — but for now, the trailer has already done its job, getting Spider-Man fans to parse a Vulture cameo frame by frame months before the movie even opens.
