Did the extravagant parties really mean as much to the participants as the show made it seem?
Reality TV has become a staple in modern entertainment. From singing competitions to house renovations, there is something for everyone. However, the genre has received criticism for its manipulation of reality and the use of fake scenarios. One example of this is the popular MTV show, My Super Sweet 16, which showcases extravagant birthday parties for wealthy teenagers. While the show was packed with drama and extreme party planning, it was also full of lies.
The first lie that was constantly presented on the show was the idea that all of the teenagers’ parties were real. However, the truth is that many of the shows’ cast members were actors hired to appear on the show. Back in 2014, one of the show’s participants named JoJo, who had a $250,000 birthday party, revealed that her entire episode was staged for the show.
The second lie that was commonly presented on the show was that teenagers could have anything they wanted for their birthday parties. In reality, most of the party planning was done by the show’s production team who had a massive budget to cover all the costs. So while it seemed like the parents were paying for everything, the truth is that MTV was the one footing the bill. Many of the participants’ parents signed contracts agreeing to relinquish control of the party planning to the show’s team.
The third lie was that the teenagers were incredibly demanding and entitled. The reality was that many of them were directed by the show’s producers to act this way for the cameras. The producers would ask the teenagers to be more dramatic and entitled during their interviews to create a more watchable show. It was not uncommon for producers to encourage participants to act out and exaggerate their actual desires.
Another lie presented on the show was the idea that these parties were truly essential to these teenagers’ lives. In reality, the parties did not mean as much to the participants as the show made it seem. Participants have appeared in interviews admitting that their priorities have shifted over the years, and their so-called “epic parties” have become less important.
It is essential to recognize the lies that reality TV shows like My Super Sweet 16 present. These shows are not a reflection of reality as they are often staged and manipulated to create an interesting narrative. It is vital to become critical viewers and analyze what we see on these shows to understand that what we are watching is often not an accurate representation of reality.
