When it comes to choosing a spouse, many factors come into play such as compatibility, love, mutual respect, and family approval. However, even with all these things checked off, there are still some couples who experience problems with their in-laws. Some celebrities are not spared from this problem, as evidenced by their families’ strong aversion to their spouse. Here are some examples of celebrities whose families literally loathed their spouse.
1. Kris Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner
Kris Jenner, the matriarch of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, had a very controversial divorce from her ex-husband, Caitlyn Jenner. However, the drama didn’t just end there. Kris’ sisters and children also criticized Caitlyn, accusing her of being a liar, attention-seeking, and creating unnecessary controversy. They claimed that Caitlyn’s transition had caused hurt and confusion for the whole family.
2. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s relationship was one of the most publicized and talked-about in Hollywood. However, it didn’t sit well with Jolie’s father, Jon Voight. He publicly expressed his disappointment in Brad – calling him a “good actor, but not a good partner” and that he was “hoping to find someone who will make Angie happy, not someone who’s going to break her heart.”
3. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

His childish antics and supposed negligence regarding Mariah’s health were the main reasons why Carey’s family intensely disliked him. They believed that he was just using their daughter for his own publicity and monetary advantage.

When Prince Harry initially introduced Meghan Markle to his family, there were reports of courtiers having concerns with their relationship. Most of the disputes were due to her nationality, race, and her previous marriage. However, the main conflict was between Meghan and Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William. It was rumored that the two of them had a falling out after Prince William advised his brother to “take it slow” with Meghan.
5. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian
The Kardashian family has been the subject of intense scrutiny since their famous reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” premiered. When Kanye West started dating Kim Kardashian, her family initially felt relieved that she finally found a man who loved her unconditionally. However, the feeling wasn’t mutual for Kanye’s family. They were said to be against their relationship because of Kim’s sexually-suggestive image and her failed marriages in the past.
In conclusion, the approval of a family towards a spouse is indeed crucial, especially for couples who value their family’s opinions.
