From the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s, “Everybody Loves Raymond” was one of the most successful sitcoms on TV.

Show creator Phil Rosenthal even famously said, “We’re all gonna be millionaires” upon hearing the audience’s uproarious reaction to a joke in the third episode. And he was right.

The family chemistry between Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and Brad Garrett, and the rest of the cast, was undeniable. It kept the show going for nine seasons and 210 episodes. It’s been more than 15 years since the show came to an end, and inevitably some cast members have passed on. These are some of the “Everybody Loves Raymond” stars who have sadly passed away.

How did Sawyer Sweeten, who played Geoffrey Barone, pass away?

The beloved TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond” aired from 1996 to 2005, following the lives of the Barone family, led by Ray Romano’s character, Raymond. The show was praised for its relatable and hilarious depiction of family dynamics, and it quickly gained a loyal following.

However, as with any piece of art, there is a bittersweet aspect to “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Several of the show’s stars have sadly passed away, leaving a hole in the hearts of fans who loved them. Here are a few of the “Everybody Loves Raymond” stars who are no longer with us.

Peter Boyle (Frank Barone)

Peter Boyle played Raymond’s cantankerous father, Frank Barone, to perfection. He brought a gruffness and humor to the role that made it memorable. Boyle, who was also known for his work in movies like “Young Frankenstein” and “Taxi Driver,” passed away on December 12, 2006, at the age of 71, after suffering from multiple myeloma and heart disease.

Sawyer Sweeten (Geoffrey Barone)

Sawyer Sweeten played Raymond’s son, Geoffrey, on the show. He and his twin brother, Sullivan, played Michael, and the pair was adorable and hilarious in their scenes together. Sadly, Sawyer Sweeten took his own life on April 23, 2015, at the age of 19. The news of his death shocked the cast and fans of the show, who had watched him grow up on screen.

Doris Roberts (Marie Barone)

Doris Roberts portrayed Marie Barone, Raymond’s overbearing mother, in a way that was simultaneously hilarious and cringe-worthy. She won four Emmy Awards for her role on the show and became a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. Roberts passed away on April 17, 2016, at the age of 90, of a stroke.

Fred Willard (Hank MacDougall)

Fred Willard played Hank MacDougall, Robert’s father-in-law, on the show. He brought a hilarious charm to the role, with his signature deadpan delivery that made even the simplest lines funny. Willard passed away on May 15, 2020, at the age of 86, of natural causes.

These four actors made “Everybody Loves Raymond” the classic show that it is today. Though they may be gone, their influence and talent live on in the memories of those who watched them bring the Barone family to life. We may have lost them, but they will never be forgotten.
