Celebrities make the news all the time for going under the knife voluntarily. Cosmetic surgery is a big business, and many stars are open about which procedures they’ve had, or hadn’t.
But what about the celebs who’ve had to get surgery as a result of traumatic injury or infection?
Millions of people in the US, including a number of celebrities, have experienced an amputation of some sort. In a country where visibility for people with disabilities is often lacking, we sometimes don’t even realize when a famous person has one. Here are a few of the celebs you may not know have had amputations.

2. Heather Mills
Heather Mills is a former model and the former wife of Paul McCartney. In 1993, she was involved in a motorcycle accident that resulted in her having her left leg amputated below the knee. Mills subsequently went on to become a Paralympic ski racer and a campaigner for animal rights and disability rights.
3. Alex Zanardi
Alex Zanardi, an Italian racing car driver, lost both his legs in a horrific accident during a CART race in 2001. Despite his injuries, he continued to race in adapted cars and won four Paralympic gold medals for hand-cycling. In 2020, he was involved in a near-fatal accident while competing in a hand-cycling race in his home country.
4. Aimee Mullins
Aimee Mullins is an American athlete, actress, and model who had both her legs amputated below the knee due to a congenital condition. Despite her physical challenges, she went on to participate in the Paralympics as well as modeling for renowned designers like Alexander McQueen.
5. Kristi Yamaguchi
Kristi Yamaguchi, a former Olympic figure skater, was born with clubfoot. She underwent multiple surgeries as a child, and her right leg was eventually amputated below the knee. Her disability did not hold her back, and she went on to win Olympic gold in 1992.
