Demi Lovato has never been shy about saying exactly what she thinks — and that habit has cost her more than a few famous friendships.

From Twitter callouts to magazine interviews, Lovato’s willingness to weigh in on everyone else’s business has put her at odds with a roster of A-listers over the years. Some of it stems from old grudges dating back to her Disney Channel days, some of it from Lovato inserting herself into other people’s feuds, and some of it from simple red-carpet awkwardness that spiraled into hashtags. Here’s a breakdown of the beefs, real and simmering, that have followed Lovato through the last several years.

• Lovato publicly slammed Taylor Swift’s $250,000 donation to Kesha in February 2016, saying Swift used feminism “to sell records” instead of having uncomfortable conversations.
• At the 2016 Met Gala, Nicki Minaj tagged only designer Jeremy Scott in a photo with Lovato, and Lovato later hit back with a red-carpet shot of Minaj glaring at her captioned #sofuckingawkward.
• Mariah Carey brushed off Lovato’s criticism of her treatment of Jennifer Lopez by telling Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in December 2016, “I don’t know her either and so I wouldn’t say anything to her.”

The Taylor Swift Rift

The tension between Lovato and Swift didn’t start with Kesha. It traces back to 2010, when Swift became best friends with Selena Gomez — Lovato’s former best friend. That old wound resurfaced in February 2016, when Lovato went public with her frustration over Swift’s $250,000 legal donation to Kesha during her contract battle with Dr. Luke, arguing that Swift leaned on feminist branding without actually engaging with the messy parts of the conversation. Lovato didn’t let it go there, either. Later that year in Glamour, she took aim at Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video, calling the spectacle of Swift tearing down a Katy Perry-inspired villain the opposite of what female empowerment is supposed to look like — a critique that lands in the same territory covered in stories about how Katy Perry has been treated by her peers.

Nicki Minaj And The Met Gala Freeze-Out

Lovato and Nicki Minaj were both guests of designer Jeremy Scott at the 2016 Met Gala, which should have made for an easy photo-op. Instead, Minaj posted a picture from the event and tagged only Scott, leaving Lovato out entirely. Lovato responded by sharing a red-carpet photo of Minaj visibly glaring in her direction, stamped with hashtags like #sofuckingawkward. The story didn’t end there — in a March 2018 Billboard cover story, Lovato revisited the night, describing it as miserable because one attendee was, in her words, a “complete bitch” who made the whole event unbearable. Lovato said the experience was bad enough that she left the Met Gala early to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting instead.

Mariah Carey’s Classic Brush-Off

In June 2016, Lovato waded into Mariah Carey’s long-running feud with Jennifer Lopez, calling Carey a legend while also branding her “unnecessarily rude” for how she’d treated Lopez over the years. Not every Lovato beef stayed subtle. Kathy Griffin’s issue with Lovato goes back further — in 2014, Griffin labeled her the “biggest douche celebrity” after Lovato publicly criticized Lady Gaga’s vomit-heavy SXSW performance art piece.
