Speaking to Jim Gray in the ring afterward, Canelo credited Plant directly, praising his skill and toughness before turning the moment toward his home country. Plant was taken to University Medical Center after the fight as a precautionary measure, a routine step following a stoppage of that kind.

The MGM Grand Garden Arena was a sellout, with 16,586 fans on hand to watch the belts change hands in real time. For a fighter whose résumé already included title runs at middleweight and light heavyweight, the undisputed status at super middleweight gave Canelo a distinction none of his contemporaries can claim — a full sweep of a single division’s championships, held simultaneously, with the loss column still sitting at just one fight in more than a decade of world-level competition.

Plant’s stock didn’t collapse with the loss — a 21-1 record against that level of competition still makes him one of the more credible names left in the division — but the immediate question in boxing circles was simple: who’s left at 168 for Canelo to fight, now that there are no more belts to unify.
