Behind the dreadlocks and blackened teeth of Tia Dalma is one of British cinema’s most quietly accomplished actresses.

Naomie Harris spent two films as the swamp-dwelling voodoo priestess in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, buried under prosthetics and grime so thoroughly that most audiences never clocked how striking she looks without the makeup chair. Her path to that role — and everywhere she’s gone since — runs through a single-parent household in North London, a Cambridge degree she didn’t enjoy, and a stretch of film work that eventually made her the first Black actress to sit behind Moneypenny’s desk.

From Finsbury Park to Pembroke College

Harris was raised in Finsbury Park by her mother, Lisselle Kayla, a Jamaican-born television screenwriter who raised her as a single parent. She was writing novels as a teenager and landed her first television roles as a child, appearing in Simon and the Witch (1987) and The Tomorrow People before she’d even finished school.

That early talent carried her into Pembroke College, Cambridge, where she studied social and political sciences and graduated in 1998. Harris has since said she felt out of place there, isolated by a wealthy, elite social scene that didn’t match her upbringing — an experience shared by other public figures who’ve talked candidly about navigating college worlds far removed from where they started. She left Cambridge and trained instead at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, the more traditional route into British acting.

28 Days Later and the Breakthrough

Harris’s real arrival came in 2002, when Danny Boyle cast her as Selena, the machete-carrying survivor of Boyle’s post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Days Later. The role put her on the map internationally, and she followed it with the lead in the TV adaptation of Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. By the time Dead Man’s Chest hit theaters in 2006, alongside her turn in Miami Vice that same year, Harris had already built a résumé far beyond the swamp-hut mysticism of Tia Dalma.

Becoming Moneypenny

Six years after Pirates, Harris joined the Bond franchise as Eve Moneypenny in Skyfall (2012), reprising the role in Spectre (2015). She wasn’t just filling a familiar name — she modernized Moneypenny into an active field agent rather than the desk-bound secretary of earlier Bond eras, and in doing so became the first Black actress to play the character in the series’ history.

Moonlight and the OBE

Harris’s most acclaimed work came in 2016 with Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. She played Paula, a mother struggling with drug addiction, in a performance shot in just three days on set. It netted her nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.

Every scene as Paula was filmed in three days — and it still earned Naomie Harris Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations.

The following year, Queen Elizabeth II appointed her an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to drama, putting her in the company of other performers whose honors and titles rarely get discussed alongside their day jobs — a distinction that sits comfortably next to the kind of recognition explored in pieces on royal-adjacent honors and titles most fans never think to look into.
