Kyle Rittenhouse verdict: Defense attorney Mark Richards offers reaction

After more than a week of deliberation, the jury in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial announced their verdict on Friday, November 19th.
The 18-year-old was facing five felony charges, including first-degree reckless homicide, in connection with the shooting deaths of two men and the injuring of a third during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin last year.
The highly publicized case had sparked nationwide debate and divided opinions, with some viewing Rittenhouse as a vigilante and others as a hero defending his community. As the verdict was read, all eyes turned to Rittenhouse’s defense attorney, Mark Richards, for his reaction.
Richards, a prominent criminal defense lawyer from Racine, Wisconsin, was instrumental in building Rittenhouse’s defense and representing him in court. After hearing the jury’s decision, Richards spoke to the media and offered his reaction.
“I am incredibly grateful and relieved for Kyle and his family,” Richards said. “The jury carefully considered all of the evidence and did their job as jurors.”
He went on to express his appreciation for the jury’s hard work throughout the trial, stating that they diligently weighed the evidence presented by both the prosecution and defense. Richards also acknowledged the difficult position the jurors were placed in, as the case had garnered significant media attention and polarized opinions.
When asked about his strategy in defending Rittenhouse, Richards stated that he always believed in his client’s innocence and was confident in the evidence presented. He also noted the importance of the self-defense argument, saying that it was a clear case of self-defense under Wisconsin law.
Throughout the trial, Richards and his team argued that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and injured Gaige Grosskreutz. They claimed that Rittenhouse was being chased and attacked by the men, and he acted in fear for his life.
The defense team also emphasized the fact that Rittenhouse was legally allowed to possess and use the AR-15 rifle he was carrying at the time, as he was 17 years old and had been given the gun by a friend for protection.
While the verdict has sparked mixed reactions from the public, Richards believes that justice was served for his client. He stated that he hopes this verdict sends a message to those who may consider becoming violent during protests, saying, “Violence is not the answer, and we hope that the end of this trial helps bring some closure to the community of Kenosha.”
However, not everyone shares Richards’ sentiment. The families of the men killed in the shootings have expressed their disappointment in the verdict, with Rosenbaum’s family calling it a “disgrace” and Huber’s family saying the system had failed them.
Despite the divided opinions, Richards emphasized that this verdict is a reflection of the justice system in our country. He stated, “We believe that the system worked and that the jury did their job. That is the beauty of our system of justice.”
As for the future, Richards noted that Rittenhouse has a difficult road ahead, given the media frenzy and widespread attention around the case. He said that his client plans to lay low and focus on his studies and family.
The Kyle Rittenhouse trial has reignited debates surrounding gun control, self-defense laws, and vigilante justice. While the verdict may not satisfy everyone, one thing is for sure: this case will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on our society.
