Clash Royale CHAMPIONS UPDATE! ⚔️ NEW RARITY, LEVEL 14, & MORE! ⚔️ (TV Royale)
Supercell just rewrote the rules of deck-building with Clash Royale’s biggest shakeup in years.
On October 25, 2021, Supercell used a fresh episode of TV Royale to formally unveil the Champions Update, and it’s not a small balance patch. The show introduced King Level 14, a brand-new card rarity called Champions, and a stack of progression changes aimed at both brand-new players and the grinders sitting at max level. Between the reveal trailer, the walkthroughs, and the “closing statements” segment, the episode covers roughly eight minutes of dense, mechanic-by-mechanic detail.
- Three debut Champions unlock at King Level 14: the Archer Queen (Cloaking Cape invisibility plus rapid-fire), the Golden Knight (chaining Dashing Dash), and the Skeleton King (Soul Summoning, which raises fallen troops as skeletons).
- Champions start at Level 11 and follow unique deck rules — only one Champion per deck, and once deployed it stays off the active cycle until it’s defeated.
- Star Points now unlock as early as King Level 6 instead of at max level, and existing Level 13 players are getting a retroactive payout of roughly 190,000 Star Points.
Three Champions Change How Decks Are Built
The headline feature is the Champion rarity itself, a tier that sits above Legendary and comes with its own activation button on the battlefield. The Archer Queen leans on stealth and burst damage with her Cloaking Cape ability, the Golden Knight dashes from target to target with Dashing Dash for pickoff potential, and the Skeleton King’s Soul Summoning turns his own graveyard into an army by raising fallen troops as skeletons. Because a deck can only hold one Champion and only one can be on the field at a time, TV Royale framed the rarity as a deliberate check on power creep — you get one game-changing ability per match, not a stack of them.
Champions unlock at 11 rather than at the new cap, and Supercell built in special in-game challenges so players who haven’t hit King Level 14 yet can still test-drive all three before committing resources to them.
Faster Progression and a Star Points Overhaul
Supercell used a big chunk of the episode on what it called “The King’s Journey,” a visual progression path that hands out Level Up Chests at every milestone. Upgrading cards between Levels 11 and 13 now costs fewer cards and less gold than it used to, and players who already paid the old, steeper price are getting refunded cards along with redistributed accumulated XP so nobody loses ground.
The bigger structural change is Star Points, which previously didn’t unlock until max level and now kick in as early as King Level 6. Existing high-level players aren’t left out — Level 13 accounts are receiving a retrospective payout of around 190,000 Star Points to square things up.
One Champion in the deck, one on the field at a time — that’s the whole design philosophy for the new rarity in a sentence.
New Rewards and Quality-of-Life Fixes
Beyond the level cap, the update adds a new Royal Wild Chest that guarantees a Champion at Level 14, and Supercell teased an upcoming Champions Gold Rush event offering up to 200,000 Gold. Legendary cards are also set to drop more frequently going forward.
On the competitive side, the tournament level cap is being lifted from 9 to 11, and Supercell is rolling out an all-inclusive deck builder for competitive modes, manual deck rearrangement by dragging cards, and the ability to copy decks straight from battle logs and TV Royale — small conveniences that longtime deck-tinkerers have been asking for. It’s the kind of structural refresh that echoes what other live-service titles have done with their own gear and progression trailers, similar in spirit to how Destiny 2’s Witch Queen weapons reveal reset expectations for its own player base, or how Apex Legends’ Defiance launch used a single trailer to lay out an entire season’s worth of new mechanics.
Testing the New Rarity Before the Cap
Because the special challenges let sub-Level 14 players sample the Archer Queen, Golden Knight, and Skeleton King ahead of time, the real test for Supercell is whether the one-Champion-at-a-time rule holds up once ladder players start building around it seriously. The Champions Gold Rush event and its 200,000 Gold payout are the next concrete date on the calendar for anyone stockpiling resources to max out their first Champion.
