Building a Workbench Booter in my Garage

Today, we’ll build a large workbench in my new garage with some extra features.

I includes bike parking, a storage area, and a BMX ramp. As ridiculous as it sounds, I can fit a ton of stuff under those ramps!

Also, being able to walk up on top of the benches allows for access to the wall space above, which would otherwise be wasted. Anyway, enjoy this project!

Notes: The benches appear to be unleveled in certain parts of the video, and indeed some of the wood was warped. After everything was screwed together and all the weight was on top, things settled in nicely. Also, I referenced “baby oil in the brakes” of my fat tire bike.

What materials are needed to build a workbench booter?

Building a Workbench Booter in My Garage

A workbench is a crucial component in any workspace, whether it’s a professional workshop or a home garage. It provides a stable surface for cutting, drilling, sanding, and assembling projects. However, not all workbenches are created equal. Some are small and unstable, while others are bulky and impractical. Therefore, building a custom workbench to your preference is an excellent way to achieve the functionality and efficiency you desire.

In this article, we will discuss how to build a workbench booter in your garage. The term “booter” refers to the bottom shelf of the workbench, which is designed to store tools, supplies, and other equipment. By building a booter into your workbench, you gain valuable storage space without sacrificing any workspace.

Materials Needed:

1. 4×4 wooden post (2)

2. 2×4 wooden boards (4)

3. 1×4 wooden boards (4)

4. 4×8 plywood sheet (1)

5. 3-inch wood screws (20)

6. 1 1/4 inch wood screws (20)

7. Wood glue

8. Sander

9. Saw

Step 1: Planning and Measuring

Before you begin building your workbench booter, you need to plan the dimensions and layout of your workbench. The size of your bench will depend on the available space in your garage and your intended use. Once you have your workbench layout, you can determine the dimensions of your booter.

Take measurements of the underside of your workbench surface and determine how much clearance you need to avoid hitting your knees when working. A booter typically measures about 12-16 inches wide, and the height is typically 6-8 inches off the ground.

Step 2: Cut and Assemble the Frame

Cut the 4×4 wooden posts to the desired length of your booter height. Then, cut the 2×4 boards according to the size of your booter’s width and length. Attach the 2×4 boards to the 4×4 posts using the 3-inch wood screws, forming a rectangular frame.

Next, cut the 1×4 boards to the same length as your 2×4 boards and attach them to the inner side of the frame using wood glue and 1 1/4 inch wood screws. The 1×4 boards will create a ledge for the booter shelf and add extra support to the frame.

Step 3: Create the Shelf

Measure and cut a piece of plywood to the size of your booter’s width and length. Sand the edges, so they are smooth and attach it to the frame using the 1 1/4 inch wood screws. If you want to add extra support to your shelf, attach additional 1×4 boards to the underside of the plywood using wood glue and 1 1/4 inch wood screws.

Step 4: Attach the Booter to Your Workbench

Once you have built your booter, it’s time to attach it to your workbench. Position your booter below your workbench surface and secure it using the 3-inch wood screws. Ensure that the frame is level before driving in the screws.

Step 5: Finish Your Workbench

Once you have attached your workbench booter to your workbench, you can proceed to add any extra features, such as drawers, shelves, or a power strip. You can also choose to paint, varnish, or stain your workbench to protect it from damage.

In conclusion, building a workbench booter is an excellent way to maximize your storage space while keeping your workspace organized and clutter-free. With the use of basic tools and materials, you can build a custom workbench booter to your specifications in a matter of hours. Happy building!
