Ford just made a diesel rig look like a toy by pulling more than a million pounds with a battery.

On July 23, 2019, Ford released a video that reframes what an electric pickup can actually do on a job site. The company brought a prototype of its upcoming all-electric F-150 to a rail yard, hooked it to a string of freight cars, and had it tow roughly 1.25 million pounds — a number Ford was careful to say has nothing to do with what a customer will ever be allowed to do with the truck. Linda Zhang, chief engineer of the F-150, was behind the wheel for the whole thing.

The Setup at the Rail Yard

Ford didn’t stage this in a lab or on a closed test track dressed up for cameras — it happened at an actual rail yard, with a group of invited real-world Ford truck owners brought in specifically to watch. That detail matters: this wasn’t a demo built for engineers to nod along to, it was built for the people who actually buy F-150s to see with their own eyes. Zhang drove the prototype herself for both phases of the pull.

The first phase was almost a warm-up by comparison. Zhang towed 10 empty double-decker freight rail cars a distance of 1,000 feet, establishing that the prototype could move that kind of rolling steel at all before anyone loaded it down further.

42 Trucks, One Symbolic Number

The second phase is where Ford turned an engineering flex into a marketing moment. Crews loaded 42 production, gas-powered, 2019-model-year F-150s into those same 10 rail cars — one for every consecutive year the F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America. With all 42 trucks aboard, the total weight behind the electric prototype came to roughly 1.25 million pounds, and Zhang towed the loaded train another 1,000 feet.

Ford was blunt about the fine print. The company attached explicit disclaimers to the video stating that the demonstration went far beyond any published production towing capacity, that it was a one-time event, and that no owner should ever attempt anything like it with their own truck.

Ted Cannis on the Electrification Push

Alongside the video, Ted Cannis, Ford’s Global Director of Electrification, framed the stunt as proof of concept rather than a preview of a spec sheet. He affirmed the company’s commitment to building tough work trucks that lean on instant electric torque rather than a traditional engine’s power curve. Cannis also noted that the electric F-150 isn’t traveling alone — a hybrid version of the F-150 and a Mustang-inspired electric SUV are both in the pipeline ahead of the fully electric truck’s eventual commercial launch.

For a company whose truck business effectively funds the rest of the lineup, putting the chief engineer herself in the driver’s seat for a rail-yard stunt in front of real customers is a specific kind of message: the torque is real, the towing numbers in the ad are deliberately theatrical, and the actual production capacity — whatever Ford ends up publishing when the electric F-150 hits showrooms — is the number that will actually matter to a buyer with a horse trailer or a job-site load.
