Why do you think it is important for celebrities to come out and share their sexual orientation and gender identities with the public?
In recent years, coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community has become a more common occurrence. While many individuals still grapple with the decision to come out, this year saw a number of celebrities opening up about their sexual orientation and gender identities. From pop stars to actors, here are a few celebs that came out in 2018.
1. Troye Sivan – The Australian singer-songwriter announced that he is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community in a 2013 video, and this year he continued to be an inspiration for many others. He remained candid about his sexuality, speaking publicly about his experiences and even promoting his album, Bloom, with the slogan “my album is gay, and it slaps.”
2. Janelle Monae – In a Rolling Stone interview earlier this year, Janelle Monae said, “Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-a** motherf*cker”. This announcement invoked a lot of love and support from fans, and Monae was praised for her bravery.
3. CJ Martin – CJ Martin is the organizer of the New York City Dyke March, and this year, she came out as a transgender woman. Martin said that she had been scared to come out, but her experience organizing the march, which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, gave her the courage to announce her true identity.
4. Brendon Urie – The Panic! At The Disco frontman had been dancing around the subject of his sexuality for years, but earlier this year, he finally opened up about being pansexual in an interview with Paper magazine. Urie has been married to his wife Sarah Orzechowski since 2013, but he said that he has also experienced romantic feelings for people of all genders.
5. Amandla Stenberg – The young actress, who is best known for her role in The Hunger Games, opened up about being bisexual in an interview with Wonderland magazine this year. Stenberg said that she was initially afraid to come out, but seeing others speak openly about their identities gave her the strength to be honest about her own.
