Celebrities rarely fail to make headlines, and while some boast them as humanitarian do-gooders, others show a side of them we’d probably rather turn a blind eye to. Like it or not, some of our favourite stars have fallen guilty to crimes that are less than glamorous. From violent assaults to drug use, from attempted to convicted murders, some of our most beloved movie, television, sports and reality stars have made some criminally bad decisions.
Celebrities are humans just like us, so it’s not surprising that they’ve had some slip ups, but when you’re always in the limelight, those mistakes can put a major damper on your career. While some committed crimes before their golden years, others fell short when their stars were shining. And of course, there are those who went off the deep end after their fame hit its peak. But no matter the timing, celebrities have always managed to get away with shortened sentences or dismissed cases, even for the most heinous crimes. If any one can get away with murder, it is indeed our dear celebs.
How does the legal system treat celebrities who commit crimes differently from non-celebrities?
In recent times, celebrities have become more than just famous personalities. They are now public figures who have an immense impact on society due to their significant influence. However, at times, these public figures cross the line of legal and ethical conduct, and commit heinous crimes that have rocked the world. In this article, we highlight ten celebrities who committed terrible crimes.
1. O.J Simpson – In 1994, the former American football player was accused of brutally murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her companion, Ron Goldman. The crime was popularly known as the “trial of the century” and was widely publicized. Despite being acquitted in criminal court, he was found liable in civil court and had to pay a considerable monetary settlement.
2. Robert Blake- The American actor was charged with the murder of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley. The incident occurred in 2001, and he was eventually acquitted of the charges in criminal court in 2005. Blake later filed for bankruptcy.
3. Phil Spector – The famous music producer was convicted of murdering actress Lana Clarkson in 2003. He was sentenced to a 19-year prison term; however, he died in prison due to complications from COVID-19 in 2021.
4. Sid Vicious – The late bassist of the Sex Pistols band was arrested and accused of murdering his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, in 1978. He was quite open about his drug addiction and violent behavior towards Spungen. On the night of the shooting, he was high on drugs and pleaded guilty to the crime but died of a drug overdose before the trial began.
5. Matthew Broderick – The famous actor was charged with vehicular manslaughter after causing a fatal car accident in 1987 that killed two people. He was fined $175 and received a suspended sentence of five years in prison.
6. Caitlyn Jenner – In 2015, she was involved in a car crash that resulted in the death of one person. Jenner was driving an SUV and rear-ended a Lexus that had stopped on the road. She was not charged with any criminal offense but was sued by the family of the deceased person.
7. Mark Wahlberg – The actor was once charged with assault and battery during his teenage years. The incident saw him and his friends attack a group of African American teenagers, which resulted in the severe injury of one of the victims. Wahlberg was initially charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for a reduced sentence.
8. Chris Brown – In 2009, the famous singer assaulted his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, leaving her with several bruises and cuts to her face and body. Brown later pleaded guilty to the crime and was ordered to complete five years of probation and community service.
9. Michael Jackson – The late King Of Pop was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy in 1993. The ensuing investigation drew media attention worldwide and divided public opinion. Jackson was acquitted of all charges in 2005 after a lengthy trial.
10. Mark Salling – The former Glee star was found guilty of possessing child pornography in 2015. Salling committed suicide a month before he was to be sentenced.
In conclusion, being a public figure does not exempt one from the consequences of criminal behavior.
