Ortega’s Tara Carpenter effectively inherits the franchise’s opening-victim role that Drew Barrymore originated in 1996, except this time the killer manipulates her home’s connected security cameras and locks instead of a landline. It’s a small but pointed update that signals how the new directing team is modernizing the mechanics of the scares without abandoning the formula.

Radio Silence Takes Over the Franchise

Directing duties fall to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the pair known collectively as Radio Silence, who broke through with the 2019 horror-thriller “Ready or Not” and previously contributed segments to the anthology films “V/H/S” and “Southbound,” along with 2014’s “Devil’s Due.” The screenplay comes from James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, while Kevin Williamson — who wrote the original 1996 script that launched the franchise — stays involved as an executive producer, giving the new creative team a direct line back to the source material.

That tagline, carried over from the trailer’s marketing, does double duty: it’s a callback to Craven’s own creative rulebook for surviving a slasher movie, and a nod to the fact that this installment is the first built without him.

Alongside Ortega, the new Woodsboro ensemble includes Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mikey Madison, Kyle Gallner and Sonia Ammar.
