Most celebrities are adept at handling interviewers; between profile pieces, press junkets, and red carpet appearances, fielding questions from a variety of outlets is an essential part of the Hollywood job description.

But in certain cases, even skilled interviewers have crossed a line with famous folks, pushing them to walk out on the conversation, or hang up, as the case may be. Here are a few times celebrities had to cut and run…

Why do some celebrities walk out of interviews?

When celebrities sit down for interviews, it’s expected that they will be asked a range of questions about their lives, careers, and the projects they’re promoting. However, there have been several instances where famous personalities have terminated interviews mid-way and walked out on interviewers.

One of the most famous examples of this was when Robert Downey Jr. walked out on a Channel 4 News interviewer Krishnan Guru-Murthy during a promotional tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Guru-Murthy had started questioning Downey Jr. about his past substance abuse issues and the actor promptly cut him off, saying “It’s just getting a little Diane Sawyer in here.” Downey Jr. then removed his microphone and walked out of the interview.

Another actor who famously walked out of an interview was Steve Carell, during a junket for his film The 40-Year-Old Virgin. During the interview, the journalist, Keith Dovkants, began asking Carell about his political views and the actor, who had previously requested that no political questions be asked, became visibly uncomfortable. Carell then ended the interview, saying “I think you’re obliged to talk about the movie.”

In 2013, Quentin Tarantino walked out of an interview with Channel 4, after he was asked about the potential link between violent movies and real-life violence. The filmmaker, known for his violent and stylized films, became agitated and refused to answer the question, saying “I’m not your slave.” Tarantino then ended the interview, calling the interviewer a “sensationalist.”

One of the most bizarre and memorable walkouts happened in 2013, when Robert De Niro, alongside Sylvester Stallone, walked out of an interview with a British radio station, after the host, David Prever, confused De Niro with Stallone. The Hollywood heavyweight became visibly frustrated and ended the interview, saying “I’m gonna leave… now.”

While some celebrities have walked out of interviews due to potentially uncomfortable questions, others have terminated interviews due to rude or unprofessional behavior from interviewers. In 2015, Cara Delevingne walked out of an interview with Good Day Sacramento, after the anchors repeatedly mispronounced her name and asked her irrelevant questions. The model-turned-actress responded sarcastically before ending the interview, saying “You make it a bit more like it’s your [her] fault.”

It’s clear that celebrities have different reactions to interviews and may not be willing to tolerate certain lines of questioning or behavior. However, it’s important to remember that they are human too, and should be treated with respect and professionalism, just like any other interviewee.
