Celebs Who Made Fools Of Themselves At Awards Shows

An annual awards show offers a chance for celebrities to promote themselves and get congratulated for a job well done.
All they have to do is stand there, look pretty, and say thanks when another pretty person hands them a trophy, or as they hand a trophy to somebody else. Sometimes, that’s apparently too much to handle, and a few stars have cracked under the pressure and made fools of themselves while the world watched on TV. Here are some of the biggest awards show fails of all time…

What did Angelina Jolie say about Harrison Ford during the 2000 awards show circuit?
Awards shows are a time to honor the best and brightest in the entertainment industry. TV, movie, and music stars alike dress in their finest attire, eagerly awaiting the moment they may hear their name called to accept a prestigious award. However, not all celebrities make it through the evening unscathed. Some stars have become infamous for their embarrassing and cringe-worthy moments at awards shows. Here are just a few of the most memorable times when celebs made fools of themselves on live television.
First on our list is Mariah Carey at the 2016 New Year’s Eve Celebration in New York City. In what was supposed to be a celebratory performance, Carey suffered an unfortunate technical malfunction. Her earpiece wasn’t working, causing her to skip parts of the song and awkwardly strut around the stage while her backup singers continued on. Ultimately, the disastrous performance saw Carey lip-syncing, stopping and starting songs mid-performance, and awkwardly shuffling around the stage while confident backup dancers continued to perform their routines.
Next up is the moment that will forever be associated with the infamous Kanye West. In a hugely controversial move in 2009, Kanye West leapt onto the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. Kanye seized the microphone and declared that Beyoncé should have won the award instead, leaving Taylor Swift visibly stunned and the audience gobsmacked. It is often referred to as one of the most disrespectful moments in the history of the awards show circuit.
Another unforgettable moment comes from Angelina Jolie in 2000. When presenting Best Supporting Actor, she declared that fellow presenter Harrison Ford was “so handsome and charming and so professional” that she would give him an award for being the sexiest actor alive. Ford blushed and looked delightfully uncomfortable as Jolie pressed a kiss onto his cheek.
Finally, we can’t forget John Travolta’s awkward moment with Idina Menzel at the 2014 Oscars. When introducing her performance of “Let It Go,” he mispronounced her name as “Adele Dazeem,” sparking a meme and a viral sensation. Travolta claimed afterwards that he had practiced the pronunciation with Menzel beforehand, but somehow still managed to mess it up on the night.
These are just a few examples of the many times celebrities have made fools of themselves in front of the world’s cameras. Whether it’s a technical malfunction, a controversial outburst, or a mispronunciation of a name, these cringe-worthy moments live on in the annals of awards show history. It’s a reminder to us all to be careful what we say and do, because in the age of live television, the whole world is watching.
