More importantly, you would be happy with who you are. For some, they’ve felt that way all along and have decided to do something about it.

In a world where gender identity has become a more openly discussed topic, transgender individuals are gaining more visibility and understanding. While it may be surprising to some, there are many individuals who were assigned female at birth, but later transitioned to male. Here are ten stories of individuals who were born female, but have since transitioned to male.
1. Chaz Bono. The son of famed musicians Sonny and Cher, Chaz made headlines in 2008 when he announced his gender transition. Since then, he has become an advocate for transgender rights and has even documented his transition in a book and film.
2. Thomas Beatie. Known as “the pregnant man,” Thomas made international headlines in 2008 when he gave birth to his first child. He was legally male at the time and had undergone hormone therapy, but had not yet had sex reassignment surgery.
3. Buck Angel. A prominent adult film actor and LGBTQ activist, Buck Angel was assigned female at birth but has since transitioned to male. 8. Dr. James Barry. A 19th-century physician and surgeon, James Barry was known for his medical accomplishments and his volatile personality. It wasn’t until after his death that it was discovered that he had been assigned female at birth.
9. Balian Buschbaum. Born Yvonne Buschbaum, Balian was a successful pole vaulter before transitioning to male. He later retired from sports and became a personal coach, helping others to explore their own identities and find self-acceptance.
10. Michael Dillon. The first person to undergo a complete sex reassignment surgery, Michael Dillon was born in the early 1900s and lived a life full of adventure and achievement. He was a medical student, a Buddhist monk, and a writer, and his legacy continues to inspire and motivate others today.
