Ten men prove that being born female never got in the way of becoming exactly who they were meant to be.

Gender identity conversations have moved from whispered questions to national headlines, and a lot of that shift traces back to a handful of visible, outspoken trans men who decided to live loudly instead of quietly. Chaz Bono’s Legal And Public Transition

Chaz Bono’s story played out with more institutional weight behind it. He came out publicly as transgender in mid-2008 and finished his legal gender and name change in May 2010. The 2011 documentary “Becoming Chaz” put his transition in front of a mainstream audience, and his advocacy work with GLAAD kept him in the conversation well beyond the film’s release. Music got its own entries: Lucas Silveira, frontman of The Cliks, transitioned at 19 and has spoken publicly about substance abuse and self-acceptance, while hip-hop artist Katastrophe (Rocco Kayiatos) added another visible name to the list.
